Empowering women in construction: a CEO's perspective

As we approach International Women's Day 2024, we celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in all fields, including those traditionally dominated by men. In the construction industry, individuals like Iris Tsouma are breaking barriers and leading the way for others to follow.

Thriving in the industry

Iris Tsouma – the CEO of Helma, Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe’s (HCME) authorised dealer in Greece – embodies determination and passion. Her father, Dimitris Tsoumas founded the company in 1985, and as she grew up, she witnessed first-hand the dedication and hard work required to thrive in the industry.

“I always knew that I would be part of the company one day,” says Iris. After studying IT at university in Athens, her interest in the construction sector led her back to Helma in 2019, where she later assumed the role of CEO.

In a sector where women are often underrepresented, Iris acknowledges the challenges but remains undeterred. When asked about advice for women pursuing careers in construction, her comment is universal: “There’s one simple recipe that brings guaranteed success. Hard work, determination, and most importantly you need to want it! Apply these three simple things in your everyday and you’ll make it in whatever sector you wish to work in.”

At Helma, Iris leads by example, with a quarter of the workforce comprising women in various roles – including finance, accounting, and support functions. As CEO, she navigates the challenges of managing and inspiring employees while prioritising the company's growth and development. “Nothing comes close to the feeling of seeing your company grow and move forward,” she adds.

Despite the demanding nature of her role, Iris values the opportunities it brings, particularly the chance to travel and meet new people. Overall, through her leadership and commitment, Iris paves the way for a more inclusive and diverse future, where women continue to break stereotypes and excel in every field they choose to pursue.
