When construction contractor Anlegg Øst Entreprenør needed an excavator to work on a railway project in Sørlandsbanen, southern Norway, it chose an ZX95US-7 for the job. The excavator was supplied by authorised dealer NASTA AS, after being adapted by the company’s Special Production Department.
NASTA also provided training for Anlegg’s team of machine operators and its service manager, Roar Haugen. Railways form a small but important part of the Anlegg’s portfolio of private and public infrastructure work, which also covers roads, flood and landslide protection, water and sewage projects, and blasting.
A reliable choice
The modified ZX95US-7 is the smallest machine on the project and working on and around train tracks places certain demands on equipment and machinery.
"The most important thing is that the machines are reliable," explains Roar. "It is also an advantage that it is easy to use. We work shifts and there are several machine operators using them, so the equipment has to work."
Easy to operate
NASTA's technical manager, Aksel Bonstad, and special construction mechanic, Håkon Aarsland Seierstad, oversaw the training, after which Sander was able to take the machine on track for a test run.
“The setup with the height restrictions was very easy to use, and that's important to us," he adds. "In addition to operational reliability, you should sit well and the machine shouldn't be sloppy!
“This will be exciting, but I think this will work very well! It will be fun to use this one. I've driven Hitachi before, but I see that a lot has happened to the machines since then.”
Special production
NASTA’s Special Production Department in Larvik tailors construction machinery for a range of purposes, including working on or around railway lines. Machines such as the converted ZX95US-7 meet all requirements of the Norwegian Railway Administration.
Features include a short rear turning radius, which allows excavators to work safely alongside an active double track. Load, swing and height limits can be placed on the machine, while a special mode provides extra traction when working on the track. Additionally, the excavator is fitted with an emergency electric power option to be used in case of engine failure.
