Participation in the "30 by 30 Alliance for Biodiversity"
November 14, 2024
Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. joined the "30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity" promoted by the Ministry of the Environment in October 2024.
30by30 (Thirty by Thirty) is an international goal in which each country aims to effectively conserve more than 30% of land and sea as healthy ecosystems, with the goal of halting and restoring biodiversity loss (nature positive) by 2030.
The "30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity" was established under the leadership of the Ministry of the Environment as a voluntary coalition of government, companies, NPOs, etc. to advance efforts toward achieving this goal on an all-Japan basis. In addition to aiming to register OECM* and expand protected areas on their own property or within their jurisdiction, participants in this alliance are expected to cooperate in realizing 30by30 by supporting the management of other areas, even if they do not own or manage land themselves.
* Areas that contribute to biodiversity conservation outside of protected areas (OECM: Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures): Refers to areas where conservation is being promoted through private initiatives, and areas where management that does not have conservation as a primary objective also contributes to protecting the natural environment.
In June 2024, the Hitachi Construction Machinery Group formulated the Biodiversity Policy, which serves as the basis for biodiversity responses, and this participation in the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity is one of the actions that reflect the ideas of this policy. The Hitachi Construction Machinery Group has already been working with stakeholders to implement reforestation (Indonesia, Zambia, etc.), environmental conservation activities around Lake Biwa, and rehabilitation of mining sites (soil recovery at the business partners), but participation in this alliance will further support these efforts.
The Hitachi Construction Machinery Group has set a vision of "Contributing to the realization of a safe and sustainable society, leaving rich lands and rich towns for the future." We will continue to aim to realize our vision by promoting business activities related to nature positive, including biodiversity.
