Case Study
Solar Panel Power Generation
Overview
At the Kharagpur Plant of Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Company Private Limited (India), utilizing power generated on solar panels installed on site covers approximately 7,000MWh per year, or approximately 30% of power consumption, using renewable energy. This not only reduces CO2, but also contributes to stabilization of power supply by supporting the government’s plan for promoting introduction of renewable energy in India where power demand is increasing rapidly alongside economic development.
SDGs Mapping (Social Issues/Solutions)
[Social Issue]
Increasingly serious global environmental problems such as average temperatures rising due to an increase in CO2 emissions
[Solution]
Contribute to the resolution of global environmental problems through the use of renewable energy and the introduction of energy-saving facilities
Solution for the Next Additional Social Issues (Anticipated)
- The entire Hitachi Construction Machinery Group will engage in saving energy in manufacturing processes
Low-Carbon Construction Machinery
Overview
The European Application Center GmbH, which was established in Germany in 2018 for marketing and development and Hitachi Construction Machinery Tierra Co., Ltd. are working together to develop low-carbon construction machinery such as developing a new prototype for a battery-powered mini excavator. By actively promoting improvements to efficiency of construction through the utilization of ICT, the aim is to reduce CO2 emissions from products by 33% compared to FY2010 by FY2030.
SDGs Mapping (Social Issues/Solutions)
[Social Issue]
Increasingly serious global environmental problems such as average temperatures rising due to an increase in CO2 emissions
[Solution]
Reduce the impact on the environment by developing and practically applying environmentally conscious products.
Solution for the Next Additional Social Issues (Anticipated)
- Realization of more productive electric construction machinery
- Expansion into classes larger than mini excavators with the aim of further business expansion
Parts remanufacturing business aimed at a circulating society
Overview
We operate a global business remanufacturing parts such as used hydraulic pumps, hydraulic cylinders and traveling devices as parts with performance equivalent to that of new parts. When failed products are discarded, all parts become waste, but waste can be significantly reduced by exchanging only the parts causing the problem. Furthermore, supplying recycled parts from part remanufacturing plants closer to the customer minimizes machinery stoppage time and leads to efficient construction. We are promoting initiatives contributing to such a circular economy.
SDGs Mapping (Social Issues/Solutions)
[Social Issue]
Reduce the occurrence of waste by effectively utilizing limited resources.
[Solution]
Collect used parts and remanufacture them as parts with the same quality and performance as new parts.
Solution for the Next Additional Social Issues (Anticipated)
- Expansion of parts that can be remanufactured
ConSite® OIL
Overview
We are promoting the global operation of the “ConSite® OIL” service for monitoring the condition of construction machinery oil. The condition of oil is detected using a sensor, and sudden changes and anomalies in the oil condition are automatically determined with the aim of improvement of preventative maintenance and fuel efficiency, and the extension of machinery lifetime.
SDGs Mapping (Social Issues/Solutions)
The occurrence of downtime caused by sudden machinery failures lowers productivity.
[Solution]
Realizing timely and appropriate maintenance through the spread of services using constant status monitoring technology reduces lifecycle cost for the customer and improves on-site productivity.
Solution for the Next Additional Social Issues (Anticipated)
- Expand the countries and regions covered to contribute to the resolution of customers’ issues in a wider range of areas.
- Improve detection precision of machinery failure prediction by actively incorporating AI, analysis and analytics technology.
Human Resource Development in Local Communities
Overview
The part remanufacturing plant of Hitachi Construction Machinery Zambia Co., Ltd. actively hires local human resources as a plant rooted in the community and focuses on the early acquisition of skills. In addition, the company is implementing an internship program for local students to support the employment of young people. At Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Company Private Limited in India, efforts are being made to develop local human resources by giving education facilities the functions of a “Japanese-style manufacturing school.”
SDGs Mapping (Social Issues/Solutions)
[Social Issue]
Improvement of places to educate leaders of the future
[Solution]
Contribute to develop manufacturing human resources by communicating Japanese style skills
[Social Issue]
Improvement of standards of living in local communities
[Solution]
Contribute to the local employment by hiring local human resources
Solution for the Next Additional Social Issues (Anticipated)
- Promotion of collaboration between government and the private sector to enable development of both communities and business
- Strengthening of ties with a variety of stakeholders worldwide
The Work Posture Automatic Determination System
Overview
By introducing a system utilizing AI image recognition technology in construction machinery manufacturing sites for automatic determination of a worker’s posture in manufacturing sites, we are working toward the realization of work environments that are safer and place less physical burden on workers. If it is determined that a worker has a posture not suitable for work, alert is displayed on the part of the screen showing the relevant worker to create a mechanism for noticing safety, work efficiency, etc.
SDGs Mapping (Social Issues/Solutions)
[Social Issue]
Face the reduction on the labor population, and create worker-friendly workplaces enabling anyone to work with safety and security
[Solution]
Understand the work processes of each person, and implement corrective education that disseminates the correct work posture and equipment
Solution for the Next Additional Social Issues (Anticipated)
- Expansion of functions and improvement of precision, such as expansion of recognizable postures and the addition of real-time alert functions
